  • Alloy Foundry, situated in the village of Merrickville on the banks of the Rideau River between Kingston and Ottawa, is Canadas oldest operating foundry, using the same traditional, hand crafted sand casting methods that are centuries old. Unlike modern industrial foundries that focus on one product, Alloy Foundry takes on specialty and one-of-a-kind jobs working in iron, bronze, aluminum, and in variations depending on the requirements of the job. In 2009, through a Chalmers Professional Development Grant from the Ontario Arts Council, Kristen Fahrig spent two months as resident artist at the foundry, learning about the sand casting process and creating bronze castings, some of which have been installed in MacGregor Park in Toronto.
